Jaynes, Arzie Henry, ward clerk of the Crescent Ward, East Jordan Stake, Salt Lake Co.,
Utah, was born Dec. 14, 1892, at Murray, Salt Lake Co., Utah, the son of Frederick D.
Jaynes and Ida A. Atwood. He was baptized Aug. 7, 1904, by James P. Jensen, jun., who
also ordained him a Deacon Sept. 6, 1906, and a Teacher, Dec. 9, 1907. He was ordained
a Priest Aug. 11, 1911, by Lawrence E. Nelson, an Elder Oct. 7, 1912, by Bishop Wm.
Fairbourn, and a High Priest Aug. 16, 1916, by Apostle Francis M. Lyman. He acted as
second counselor to William Fairbourn of the Crescent Ward from Aug. 6, 1916, until the
death of Bishop Fairbourn Aug. 4, 1918. In 1912-1916 he filled a mission to Tonga, or the
Friendly Islands, during which he acquired a good knowledge of the Tongan language,
enabling him to speak freely both in public and in private. In 1918 (Oct. 3), he married
Mary Ellen Hardcastle, in the Salt Lake Temple, which marriage has been blessed with
four children (two sons and two daughters), namely, Arzie Lynn, Theron Hardcastle,
Rella and Luana.
At home Elder Jaynes has held many local Church positions and on Dec. 21,
1924, he was and set apart as ward clerk in the Crescent Ward, which position
he still holds. Bro. Jaynes has been a resident of Crescent Ward since 1903 and
is a farmer by occupation.
